Eric Boulton had two assists for the Thrashers, who have won five out of six, and moved two points ahead of Tampa Bay for first place in the Southeast Division, with 84 points. Atlanta is in search of it's first playoff appearance in franchise history.
Alexander Ovechkin scored both Washington goals but couldn't prevent the eighth straight defeat for the Caps. Brent Johnson let in three goals on 15 shots, and left after straining himself while trying in vain to stop Keith Tkachuk's goal late in the second period. Frederic Cassivi came on in relief, allowing one score on six shots in the third period.
Slava Kozlov's 300th career goal posted the Thrashers to a 1-0 lead at the 11:26 mark of the first period.
Holik's goal late in the first period was a case of incredible concentration. Fallen to his stomach and sliding towards the crease, he still managed to bat the pass from Boulton past Johnson to make it 2-0 Atlanta with 3:09 left in the first.
Ovechkin's first score, at 5:27 of the second period, cut the Thrashers lead in half, making it 2-1.
Tkachuk's tally at 14:30 of the second period restored the two-goal lead for Atlanta. Johnson, who went to a split to try to stop the shot, appeared to injure himself on the play. He stayed on for the rest of the period, but did not return in the third period.

Kovalchuk ripped a wrister from the right circle through the five-hole, though, putting Atlanta up 4-2 at the 9:35 mark, and the Thrashers held on for the win.

Getting rid of these games will cut down on the number of contests that you need to handicap while staying away from backdoor or front-door covers.
What is a backdoor and front-door cover you ask? A backdoor cover is a team that is getting beat by more than the spread, but scores late to get within that number thus covering the spread. A front-door cover is just the opposite where the favorite scores late and covers the number they are favored by.
These front-door and backdoor covers are common when second and third string players enter games in college football and it can be the worst nightmare for some bettors. These players can also be your best friend, but ask any bettor and he will give you more instances on losing in this situation than winning. Turnovers are the single most frustrating, and at times the most gratifying, aspect of a college football lines, mostly because they are so unpredictable. They are part of the game and most of the time nothing can be done to control them. However, turnovers are contagious and they can carry over from game to game and season to season.
It’s important to know how to forecast these unforeseen events and how to use them to your advantage. You can find ways to give yourself an edge by looking at past histories of teams and coaches and how they have fared in turnover wars in the past. Instead of turnovers hurting you at the wrong times, find ways to use them to your advantage.
As you can see, college football handicapping is very labor intensive and isn’t just based on where teams are ranked in the AP and coaches polls. Experience, coaching and match-ups are all important since unlike the NFL, college teams turn over much more often with new personnel at most positions every single year. Keeping current on this information is vital.
